Enhancing smartphone interfaces

Users are getting more accustomed to using voice for search on smartphones, as the technology for natural language understanding and conversational dialog become more accurate and common. Data shows that the volume of voice search is growing at over 50% year on year. The convenience of speaking a complex command and getting an action done is preferable in many situations compared to picking up the smartphone, opening an app, and clicking several buttons to take the same action. For instance, one would much rather pick up the phone and say “book a ticket for tomorrow’s 6:30pm show of the movie Star Wars The Last Jedi at the Showcase cinemas downtown.” To accomplish this using the touchscreen will require many clicks and selections. As conversational interfaces become more sophisticated this mode of interaction will be affect smartphones applications in significant ways.
